Preliminary Study of Herpetofauna Diversity in University of Jember, Indonesia
Keywords:
Herpetofauna, Diversity, University of JemberAbstract
Herpetofauna has an important role in the ecosystem, including consumers in the food chain, pest controllers, and bioindicators. It has wide distribution from primary forest to urban area. This study is to determine the diversity of herpetofauna species in the University of Jember that is located near an urban area. The method was Visual Encounter Survey (VES) combined with time-restricted search. Data was collected seven times during 2022-2023. The results obtained were 19 species, consisting of 6 amphibians and 13 reptiles. Family Gekkonidae (Gekko gecko, Hemidactylus platyurus, H. frenatus) and Colubridae (Ahaetulla prasine, Dendrelaphis pictus, Ptyas korros) have the highest species richness with three species. According to abundance, H. frenatus has the highest number of individuals (45 individuals). The results of the Shannon-Wienner diversity index obtained a value of 2.27, which means it is in the in the medium category. This result is a preliminary study to reveal the diversity of herpetofauna in urban areas at the University of Jember. It needs further surveys periodically for measuring the diversity of herpetofauna for whole area in the University of Jember.
